4. Wow! I visited the USSR back in the late '80s with my grandmother and the peace group she joined

We visited with Russian peace groups and saw a lot of the country. Back then it was under Gorbachev who had instituted more progressive policies and everyone we met was welcoming, friendly and dedicated to peace. The people had gone through hell during WWII, fought on their own land, and never wanted to experience war again. *sigh*

And we were scheduled to travel to Kiev, but then Chernobyl happened, so we visited Tbilisi, the capitol of then-Soviet Georgia instead. Knowing what we're learning now, I wish that we had been able to visit Ukraine.
