Inside Chornobyl, 40 years after the world's worst nuclear disaster - PBS NewsHour

Forty years ago, the world’s worst nuclear power disaster exploded into history at the Soviet Union’s Chornobyl nuclear plant in what is now Ukraine. The ensuing cover-up and clean-up operation made Chornobyl a byword for dereliction and mismanagement. Special correspondent Simon Ostrovsky and cinematographer Amanda Bailly report from the Chornobyl exclusion zone. - Aired on 04/24/2026.

I was a kid in West Germany and we were coming back to the barracks one early morning. And our NBC Nuke Biological Chemical Sergeant was outside the barracks with a Geiger counter.

We visited with Russian peace groups and saw a lot of the country. Back then it was under Gorbachev who had instituted more progressive policies and everyone we met was welcoming, friendly and dedicated to peace. The people had gone through hell during WWII, fought on their own land, and never wanted to experience war again. *sigh*

And we were scheduled to travel to Kiev, but then Chernobyl happened, so we visited Tbilisi, the capitol of then-Soviet Georgia instead. Knowing what we're learning now, I wish that we had been able to visit Ukraine.
