I give you that you're right about one can check a candidate on the second item on the ballot. I found that out later. But I still say the less people who go along with the tricky ballot and mark for someone else, the more chance there is of someone who gains only 15% or 20 or 25% of the vote can become governor because if not enough people vote "NO", the candidate with the most votes on Item 2 on the ballot wins. Remember, the whole thing is a republican-ginned up effort. The best thing to do if you're a Democrat and want to keep the Democratic governor is to vote for Newsom by voting "NO" on Item 1 on the recall ballot.
