There are only a few examples of a classically male character role being assumed by a female portrayer that have succeeded. If it were the role of a generic character, a pilot, astronaut, President, military leader, or any other, I would be optimistic. But James Bond has appeared on screens as a male character for how many decades--not to mention cemented in consciousness for those who read the books?

I certainly wish her luck, but I cannot imagine wanting to take that role. Perhaps I will be surprised. Sometimes men assuming a classically female role have surprisingly worked, so who knows?
