After years of incessant rumours, the news has finally dropped... We now know the identity of the actor playing the next James Bond.
The likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, Scott Rose-Marsh and Callum Turner were rumoured to be in contention for the next superspy, and recent reports suggested that 28-year-old Australian actor Jacob Elordi was the current favourite to play 007.
Now, Euronews Culture can officially end all speculation by revealing that the identity of the new James Bond is... Irish actress and singer Jessie Buckley.
You read correctly: James Bond will be played by a woman for the first time, in the wake of Lashana Lynch briefly taking over the 007 mantle in Daniel Craigs Bond swansong, 2021s No Time To Die.

(113,973 posts)There are only a few examples of a classically male character role being assumed by a female portrayer that have succeeded. If it were the role of a generic character, a pilot, astronaut, President, military leader, or any other, I would be optimistic. But James Bond has appeared on screens as a male character for how many decades--not to mention cemented in consciousness for those who read the books?
I certainly wish her luck, but I cannot imagine wanting to take that role. Perhaps I will be surprised. Sometimes men assuming a classically female role have surprisingly worked, so who knows?

(62,157 posts)An Amazon spokesperson told Euronews Culture: Were distancing ourselves from the previous stance held by franchise head Barbara Broccoli, who said that Bond should only be played by a man. Were thrilled to have Jessie Buckley on board. Additionally, her initials are also JB, so thats delightful. Plus, her singing background makes her the ideal candidate for the project, as weve been thinking of adding some musical numbers into the mix.

An April Fool's Day prank from Euronews "reported" that the Hamnet standout had been cast as 007 in Denis Villeneuve's upcoming James Bond movie.
Of course, this isn't real. The article takes a highly satirical tone; it's just meant to be a prank in honor of the first day of April. There will be a lot of this out there on this particular day. Keep your head on a swivel!
Buckley would be an inspired pick to play 007, but her casting is not real. It's just a joke.
