It was very common in the early to mid part of the 1900's for southern GQP elected officials to use the word openly or to drawl "Negro" in such a way that it sounded the same.

Unfortunately in business I have had to spend time with some of these types. Everyone with a brownish skin is referred to derisively as a "Mexican" no matter where they are from. Italians, people from Middle Eastern countries etc. all get lumped in with that word.

In the northern states they were slightly more guarded in using words. But not by a lot and the sentiment was the same no matter the reluctance to use the words.
