(2,430 posts)However, a request in 1975 from the Alaska state legislature to the United States Board on Geographic Names to do the same at the federal level was blocked by Ohio congressman Ralph Regula, whose district included McKinley's home town of Canton.
So Alaska renamed 50 years ago and requested the Federal Government to officially rename it then as well but some jerk of a Republican Congressman didn't want to change it. When Obama finally renamed it in 2015 the renaming of the mountain received praise from Alaska's senior U.S. senator, Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who had previously introduced legislation to accomplish the name change. I thought Republicans professed to be all about states rights so why does Trump want to overrule the wishes of the state (A pretty hardcore Republican state, in fact)?
