Trump vows to rename Denali as Mount McKinley

Source: Reuters

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday he will rename Denali, Alaska natives' name for North America's tallest mountain, after William McKinley, the 25th U.S. president who was assassinated in 1901.

Democratic former President Barack Obama in 2015 officially renamed the mountain as Denali, siding with the state of Alaska and ending a decades-long naming battle. The peak had been officially called Mount McKinley since 1917.

"They took his name off Mount McKinley," Trump said in a speech to supporters in Phoenix. "He was a great president," Trump, a Republican, said, adding that his administration will "bring back the name of Mount McKinley because I think he deserves it."

The mountain, which has an elevation of more than 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), was named Mount McKinley in 1896 after a gold prospector exploring the region heard that McKinley, a champion of the gold standard, had won the Republican nomination for president.

Trump is such a bastard.

McKinley never visited the mountain, has no real connection to it.

The state had restored the.original Native American name in 1975.

McKinley is known mostly for raising tariffs.

Even as it is, it's an insult to the Lakota people. And would Trump even want to share a mountain with other presidents? He'd want a bigger one all to himself. Maybe Denali, since he's going to try to rename it anyhow, but he'd probably want one closer to home that his adoring cult members could worship all the time. Devil's Tower, maybe?

Is the Crazy Horse Memorial bigger than Mount Rushmore?

When completed the Crazy Horse carving will be 641ft long and 563ft tall. Mt Rushmore is 203ft long and the heads are 18.3m 60ft high. The left side of the face, black rock to nose, is where all four presidents of Mt Rushmore would fit.

Sun Dec 22, 2024, 03:53 PM

because it's too woke to respect the naming traditions of the people who bestowed those names in the first place? There was a big kerfuffle here in Minneapolis a few years ago at the renaming of Lake Calhoun, named before the Civil War after John C. Calhoun, an ardent supporter of slavery, the removal of Natives from their lands and states' rights. That's not why the lake was named after him - it had to do with his authorization of the construction of Fort Snelling, and naming the lake was how the surveyors of the area at that time honored him - but his support for slavery and Native removal gave his name a bad odor and there was a lot of pressure to give it its original Dakota name back. After extensive litigation (and a lot of whining by the rich folks on the west side of the lake) over who had the authority to rename it back to Bde Maka Ska, it finally happened in 2020. If it were the subject of federal jurisdiction Trump would probably insist on giving it back to that dead racist fuck Calhoun.

From 2016
https://alaskapublic.org/news/2016-11-16/will-president-trump-follow-through-on-changing-denalis-name-back-to-mt-mckinley

After the 2016 presidential election, President Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke reportedly asked Alaskan senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski if they wanted Trump to reverse the name change. The two senators told Trump that they did not want this to happen, and Trump agreed not to reverse the name change.[38][39]

A fitting name for the highest peak in North America.

As much as Trump loves using the word “great”, it seems he’d be cool with a name describing the mountain as great. But no……

I agree with other posters in that this is Trump being petty and wanting to erase something positive from the Obama administration.

Sun Dec 22, 2024, 06:13 PM

However, a request in 1975 from the Alaska state legislature to the United States Board on Geographic Names to do the same at the federal level was blocked by Ohio congressman Ralph Regula, whose district included McKinley's home town of Canton.

So Alaska renamed 50 years ago and requested the Federal Government to officially rename it then as well but some jerk of a Republican Congressman didn't want to change it. When Obama finally renamed it in 2015 the renaming of the mountain received praise from Alaska's senior U.S. senator, Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who had previously introduced legislation to accomplish the name change. I thought Republicans professed to be all about states rights so why does Trump want to overrule the wishes of the state (A pretty hardcore Republican state, in fact)?
