Trump was still the President. Trump helped plan, and encouraged funding for, the stop the steal rally where Trump was the main speaker. At the rally Trump riled up an angry mob to march to the Capitol to find Mike Pence to delay/stop certification of the election. Trump did not march with the mob as he said he would. Instead he watched events unfold on TV. He fielded calls to put a stop to his angry mob now turning violent and breaking into the Capitol while Congress ran for their lives (Hawley, Romney, etc.) while others hid and barricaded themselves. Trump delayed any action against the mob until he could see the insurrection attempt would fail. After, Trump was admonished for the stunt by both Democrats and Republicans. Most Republicans, not wanting to lose political power, eventually decided to stick with the failed insurrectionist.
