GOP report recommends Liz Cheney be criminally investigated over Jan. 6 work
Source: The Hill
Republicans released a report Tuesday reviewing the failures and politicization of the now-disbanded House Jan. 6 committee, capping their investigation by recommending a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.).
The 128-page interim report forwards many of the claims circulated by the GOP since the committee was organized, complaining the Jan. 6 select committee was improperly constituted and unfairly pinned blame on President-elect Trump.
Speaker [Nancy] Pelosis multimillion-dollar Select Committee was a political weapon with a singular focus to deceive the public into blaming President Trump for the violence on January 6 and to tarnish the legacy of his first Presidency, the report states.
The reports conclusion also calls for an FBI investigation into Cheney, accusing her of witness tampering by being in touch with star witness Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide.

(9,887 posts)That while in Congress she voted with Trump over 90% of the time and accused Democrats of killing babies after they are born as a form of (very) late term abortion?
If there was one clear and unequivocal takeaway from the election its that the placating of Republicans should have ended on November 5th.
These people are not our friends or allies. Before it's all done they will fuck Democrats over and just be another trump sycophant because they are Republicans and can't help themselves.

The ones who sprawled their legs, with arms crossed, maybe eyes shut or making snotty comments when the teacher talked. Or trying to imtimidate or belittle other kids in the class. I never thought any othe them would make it to leadership positions. Yet, there they are, with the same attitude as when they sat in school, with no class.

(11,162 posts)Trump was still the President. Trump helped plan, and encouraged funding for, the stop the steal rally where Trump was the main speaker. At the rally Trump riled up an angry mob to march to the Capitol to find Mike Pence to delay/stop certification of the election. Trump did not march with the mob as he said he would. Instead he watched events unfold on TV. He fielded calls to put a stop to his angry mob now turning violent and breaking into the Capitol while Congress ran for their lives (Hawley, Romney, etc.) while others hid and barricaded themselves. Trump delayed any action against the mob until he could see the insurrection attempt would fail. After, Trump was admonished for the stunt by both Democrats and Republicans. Most Republicans, not wanting to lose political power, eventually decided to stick with the failed insurrectionist.

(4,703 posts)I don't believe Joe should pardon her or any of the Jan 6th committee members. That would imply that they're guilty of something. Let trump go after her (and the other members)! That will just expose the January 6th insurrectionists to the microscope again, and that won't be a good look (for trump).

(102,693 posts)Which is neutral advice that Hutchinson really did need.
The interim report shows texts between Hutchinson and Alyssa Farah Griffin, another former White House aide, and accuses Farah Griffin of acting as a backchannel between the two women.
It later notes that Hutchinson reached out to Cheney, with the lawmaker in her own book noting she advised the aide to seek an attorney as every witness deserves an attorney who will represent their interests exclusively.
Hutchinson walked the panel through her early efforts to secure low-cost legal representation beginning November 2021, when she became aware she would be subpoenaed to appear before the select committee. She eventually received a call from Stefan Passantino, a former White House ethics lawyer, in early February, who said he would be representing her but declined to reveal who was paying him. Hutchinson expressed to the committee her concern of being represented by an attorney with ties to Trump and recalled telling her mother after Passantino was brought on as her lawyer that Im f**ked.
Good call.
Hutchinson first met with Passantino on Feb. 16 at the Washington, D.C., office of the law firm Michael Best, she told investigators, and said he urged her to downplay your role. You were a secretary, Hutchinson said Passantino told her, according to the transcript. You had an administrative role. Everyones on the same page about this. Passantino also told Hutchinson, Were going to take care of you, she revealed to the committee.
Being taken care of by a Trump-connected lawyer does not sound very similar to being taken care of by the Sisters of Mercy. Hutchinson was sharp enough to realize this and went shopping for her own lawyer. She found him and they negotiated her public testimony to the January 6 select committee, which was one of the highlights of the hearings. Now it seems as though Loudermilk is accusing Hutchinson and Cheney of conspiring to find an attorney who would actually act in Hutchinsons interest. Horrors. Also, Loudermilks report implies that Hutchinsons testimony at the hearings was perjurious as a result of this effort. Good luck proving that, rube.

(2,430 posts)She has broken no laws, and they won't be able to "prove" anything. Accusations and innuendo mean nothing. Just like they tried for years to do something to Biden but failed because he did nothing wrong. All they had were false accusations and innuendo. Don't get me wrong, just floating this out there is a tremendous abuse of power, but they will not be successful in actually bringing Liz Cheney(or anyone else) down.

Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said an interim report released by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., who chairs the House Administrations oversight subcommittee, which investigated the Jan. 6 select committee.
The report specifically alleged that House Republicans, as part of their investigation into the Jan. 6 investigation, found evidence showing Cheney tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without her attorneys knowledge......
And thats ultimately what makes this story so notable. Its easy to brush off baseless claims from a subcommittee, but the broader political context matters: Well soon have a new president hellbent on retaliating against his perceived enemies, and the former Wyoming congresswoman is a foe Trump seems to enjoy hating. This is the same president-elect, of course, who not only spent his first term trying to weaponize federal law enforcement, but who also intends to put sycophantic partisans in charge of the Justice Department and the FBI.
The New York Times published a related analysis following Loudermilks claims, adding, For years, President-elect Donald J. Trump has made it known that people he believes to be his enemies should be prosecuted. This week, his allies in Congress laid out a template for how to go after one of them in particular: Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming representative who has been a focus of Mr. Trumps anger.
So much for nobodys going to be going after Liz Cheney.
For her part, the former House GOP Conference chair responded to the allegations in a statement that said Loudermilks report intentionally disregards the truth and the Select Committees tremendous weight of evidence, and instead fabricates lies and defamatory allegations in an attempt to cover up what Donald Trump did. Cheney added, Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence, and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth.
