What kind of country or party sets its foreign policy on the wishes, nay dictates even, of a foreign nation?

But I think you have captured the problem in a nutshell albeit perhaps inadvertently.

The part that actually seems disingenuous to me are the platitudes around a two-state solution. I see them as nothing more than platitudes from Western nations as we clearly see now. They all stood by as Israel expanded its illegal settlements for decades and carried out the Gaza genocide. Pshaw!

The status quo on Israel of decades, which is what you are suggesting, is not going to fly with voters any longer. Not after Gaza. Now Lebanon and Iran too.
