(115,031 posts)And yes, it is every bit the sadistic, dangerous-as hell deplorable viewer "sport" as crowding the Coliseum to watch gladiators be torn apart in Roman times. Less bloody? Less predictably deadly? Yes. But the sadism is there.
It is one thing to watch violent sports for which precautions are taken to decrease or eliminate bodily harm and rules exist to ameliorate such risks. American football being, but one example. Even boxing has some rules built in around it, however inadequate. If you have ever seen the rare video of chimpanzees--the most aggressive of nonhuman primates- slaughtering each other, their bare feet kicking and destroying their enemies or even group-mates, you might be embarrassed to have ever defended the human equivalent. Jane Goodall found this devastating--no matter how rare among those chimps she studied over decades. I have to think she would feel similarly to me seeing humans behave similarly--for entertainment.
Different strokes for different folks, you say? Well, stay away from me if this is how you get your jollies. I see the aftermath in my ER and the crying family and friends when that brain damage is irreversible.
