From the first Star Wars movie (was that really 49 years ago?).

The Republicans haven’t yet figured out that the emperor has no clothes, and that big spear of his has no blade at its tip. Maybe they never will. It took the Germans a carpet bombing of their cities before they realized that their Führer was leading them straight to Hades.
