129. I have a different memory of those formative years

I grew up in the 1950's and 60's and went to Catholic schools for most of that time. We were told that we could go to other churches and other religious services, but we couldn't "participate" in their services. In other words, the communion that is shared in the Protestant churches isn't the same thing as the Catholic communion, so we couldn't take part in that. (It was a mortal sin, we were told.)

The one thing that I recall from going to my friends' churches was that their Protestant services involved a lot more Bible-reading, but we Catholics had better songs. Nowadays it's the opposite ... the Catholics are reading more Bible passages but the Protestants have better songs.
