I spent twelve years in the FRG. We lived off post.I met many ex-nazis. They were all alcoholics. Regrets from the war. One of them I met was an engineer. He worked on the tiger's automatic transmission then he worked on the me 262. They didn't know about the death camps until Ike took them on tours and they stood at the open Mass Graves full of emaciated bodies. The camps didn't burn all of them. Visiting Dauchau. I saw the photos of the victims of medical experimentation. I do believe that scarred me for life. I was 10 years old. Not everybody in the army was a Nazi. But they were all Christian nationalists.
