In the summer of 1970 I noticed a shift in what I was hearing from people. Many people started saying things like "you need to change yourself before you can change the world" and "be the change you want to see" and "change takes time" and "work from the inside" etc. There was an increased focus on personal lifestyle and a corresponding drop in political activism. This happened right after the Kent State shootings, and it seemed clear to me that people were motivated by fear and were just making up other plausible sounding reasons for leaving the resistance.

I don't blame people for being frightened, then and how. I do think we should be honest about it, though.
