You contact a legislative rep about any matter, they pay way more attention to you if you mention you are in a union.

I ALWAYS mention I am on the executive board of my teacher’s union.

You are just Joe Shmoe if you call about some matter. If you mention you are in a union, you are in a potential voting block.
