person on the line what their exact corporate name and their EIN or TIN number is. Then hang up and look up the EIN or TIN on the IRS website for charities to determine their legitimacy. If the charity has been approved by the IRS as a legitimate charitable org. they might have a web site and the EIN or TIN must be on the web site. If not, call or email the charity and ask. Also there are a few non-IRS agencies that monitor the behavior and legitimacy of non profits that can verify the charity's existence as well.
