(5,062 posts)of the electorate we have reached a place where the only real issue is whether or not we keep the, very flawed, democracy that we have.
Because about one third of the electorate is so ignorant and apathetic that they couldn't even be bothered to vote, and the other two thirds are almost divided equally, we might be able to fight off the authoritarian takeover with just the voters in the "middle".
But we might not. Those people who are apathetic or ignorant enough to not have voted against Trump last fall may not wake up quickly enough in the numbers that we need. Indeed, because many have absolutely no idea what is going on, many of them may vote for authoritarianism.
I think that if there is a sliver of the Republican party who value keeping democracy we need to ally with them for that. It isn't as if Democratic politicians haven't allied with Republicans on other issues for decades. In Europe many times parties to the left of our Democratic party ally with right wingers strategically.
