The Roman's saw the female goddess staues and painted over the name with 'Virgin Mary'. This happened with a lot of pagan gods. They just got renamed to saints.
This happened to St Nicholas (i.e. Santa Claus). He was a pagan shaman who would slide into people's homes in the winter with a load of magic mushrooms to be dried over the fireplace.

Over the years, I've seen a lot of pictures of burned-down houses where only a chimney column survives.
