His Design skills were really intuitive, so in that, he was actually a good design engineer. He, like other "tech geniuses" like Gates, just needed other specialist engineers to implement his designs.

I think a lot of Tech Bro ego nonsense began with the breakups of Bell and GE - when research divisions at corporations were pretty much disbanded and everyone got severance, a lot of individual innovation design engineers who were just high enough to know a bit about Program Management struck out on their own to create start-ups without the other engineers, code gurus, and research scientists they used to work with. From the late 80's through the mid 00's, these guys continued to leverage off the work of other engineers and the organizations they used to work with to market the "innovative" thing they had been working on back in the day.
It's really easy to say "That was a product of MY genius" when you're no longer part of a huge R&D team and no one's around to contradict you. And if your severance was large enough, you can hire other engineers or researchers on short term contracts to actually engineer the solution for your great idea so you can take it to market. And still claim it was all you.
