Civil Rights Act [View all]

One of the reasons the Supreme Court cited when overturning the preclearance requirements in the Civil Rights Act during the Shelby v. Holder case was the belief that America had changed, making significant progress in eliminating racial discrimination. What they failed to acknowledge is that this progress wasn’t due to people becoming less racist, but rather because there were safeguards like the Civil Rights Act in place to keep racist behaviors in check. Now, I fear the entire law could be dismantled, removing these safeguards and giving racists free rein to act without accountability.
