One of the reasons the Supreme Court cited when overturning the preclearance requirements in the Civil Rights Act during the Shelby v. Holder case was the belief that America had changed, making significant progress in eliminating racial discrimination. What they failed to acknowledge is that this progress wasnt due to people becoming less racist, but rather because there were safeguards like the Civil Rights Act in place to keep racist behaviors in check. Now, I fear the entire law could be dismantled, removing these safeguards and giving racists free rein to act without accountability.

(3,892 posts)The door was open for the racist legislators to start their crusade of gerrymandering voting districts throughout the south. That was the biggest mistake.
We need to fully reinstate the voting rights act, even augment it and make it irrevocable.
