What is the difference between a pane of glass and a mirror. (Why not hang a pane of glass on your wall?) A mirror has a dark backing layer, to prevent light coming out from beneath the glass, so, all you see is the reflection from the glass. The same goes for a “reflecting pool,” yes, any old pool of still water will reflect light, but when you look at a blue swimming pool, you see the blue (and some reflection.)
