Trump Voters Speak Out: 'The Pay Didn't Increase, But the Bills Did' - The Logical Leftist [View all]
A Trump voter in a Bulwark focus group says her health insurance tripled in a single year. "The pay didn't increase, but the bills did." Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell has been tracking Biden-to-Trump switchers since the 2024 election and the receipts are coming in hard.
Sarah Longwell of The Bulwark has been running focus groups with voters who switched from Biden in 2020 to Trump in 2024 not lifelong MAGA, but swing voters who made a calculated bet that Trump would bring prices down. What she found was a coalition describing health insurance premiums tripling, car insurance with no cap, SNAP cuts hitting their neighbors, and college graduates with bachelor's degrees stuck working retail a full year after finishing school. These are Trump's own voters, on the record, in their own words.
The specific receipts tell the story. One voter described concern over SNAP cuts "really hurting poor people," a daughter who graduated college nearly a year ago and still cannot find work in her field, vanishing entry-level jobs, and anxiety about ICE operations in her community. Another described knowing multiple people with bachelor's degrees working retail for years. And one focus group participant mentioned she loves to travel but cannot right now not because of cost, but because of the chaos at the airports. The disruption has moved out of Washington and into everyday life.
Longwell put the clearest frame on what is actually happening: "Whenever people are like, 'he's playing fifteen-dimensional chess,' I'm like, 'no, he's eating the pieces, guys. Just eating what's on the board.'" There is no long game designed to benefit the people who voted for him. There is a president who disrupts because disruption is his mode and the people absorbing the consequences are his own voters. The tariffs are just starting to hit supply chains. The SNAP cuts are just beginning to roll out at scale. What these focus group voters are describing is the early stage. The reckoning is still coming.
