It is Ottawa's move to secure independent defense capabilities in the Arctic. Canada is rewriting the rulebook on national security and international relations.

Considering the proximity of Russia to North America across the Arctic, Americans can be grateful that our northern neighbor's changes in the operational structure of NATO and and the data sovereignty of Canada over the U.S. in the intelligence network of The Five Eyes. Their decision to be the gatekeeper of Arctic intelligence domain, will benefit Americans, though not US corporations or defense industry, because the U.S. is no longer a reliable ally for Canada or NATO.

"They are worried that an American commander focused on a global threat picture might
sacrifice Canadian interests or escalate a situation in the Canadian Arctic that
could have been handled diplomatically.

They are buying time. That is what this technology really buys them. By controlling the data and the command structure, they buy the time to make their own political decision about whether to shoot, whether to block or whether to talk.

They are reclaiming the sovereignty of the decision loop. And for a country that has spent 70 years
essentially outsourcing its existential security decisions to Washington, that is a psychological revolution.
