Traffic can be stressful for even the most seasoned NJ driver, and downright terrifying for injured wildlife.

Luckily, an injured swan, with noticeable cuts on its leg, and its apparent mate had Palisades Park resident Fred Kowal on their side Thursday morning (August 8, 2013), when they found themselves trapped on the shoulder between Exits 16W and 15W on the New Jersey Turnpike early Thursday morning (August 8th, 2013).

Although the injured swan could walk, it was apparently uncomfortable for her to do so. Mr. Kowal attempted to lure the birds into a nearby marsh, where they would be safe from passing traffic. He was eventually joined my a NJ Turnpike official who also stopped to help.

State police shut down NJ Turnpike southbound lanes and Kowal, along with highway employees and another trucker, was eventually able to shoo the birds into the marsh using a broom from Kowal’s truck. Kowal followed the birds for awhile to ensure that they kept away from the highway.
