White House to honor Texas gun control advocate [View all]

The White House will honor John Woods, a University of Texas at Austin Ph.D. graduate, and eight others on Thursday as “Champions for Change” in reducing gun violence in their communities.

John Woods was an undergraduate at Virginia Tech during the 2007 massacre there. Woods’ girlfriend and 31 others died in the Blacksburg, Va., killings.

Woods helped found and now serves on the advisory board for Texas Gun Sense, a charity that promotes fact-based educational information about gun policies.

He has spoken out against campus carry bills introduced in the Texas Legislature, saying in 2012 that he doubted concealed handguns on campus would make much difference in such an incident.
