When I was younger, I had a friend who "chose" to believe in Santa. She and her parents had received help from a Secret Santa at a time when things were so tough for them that they would otherwise not have had a Christmas. Her parents divorced soon after, at a time when divorce was uncommon.

All of their lives improved. She moved away, but I think of her often at this time of year. She is part of my Christmas story.

If Santa is real for you, that is good. I hope he is still real for my friend Teddy, wherever she is. In her own way, she made him real for me.
