I used to think that indulging the more beastly imagination would effectively sublimate the need for action, but I am starting to drift away from that view as the porn becomes more violent, more misogynistic, and more pointless. If it turns out that indulging actually stimulate the need to act out, I'm going to be very intellectually humiliated, indeed. And your point about limiting imagination comes into play here: if that is all there is (what self-respecting he-man would watch "female friendly" erotica anyway?), then what does one have on which to base his own imagination or fantasy? And to some extent at least, we do base our actions on our prior expectations. Which might lead us to wonder just to what extent Dartmouth Dude is simply a little prick, and how much he reflects a conventional attitude of some subset of our culture.
