The term has been replaced by "hypersexuality", because of too much cultural ballast: It depends on the culture whether sexual hyperactivity and promiscuity are regarded as something bad and where the line is drawn.
Nymphomania is listed as mental disorder by some psychological institutions, but not by others.

Unusually large sex-drive is considered one symptom of nymphomania.

An example for nymphomania is when someone is afraid to commit to a deeper relationship emotionally and substitutes the resulting lack of emotional contact with sexual contact. Sex becomes a drug.
