(8,170 posts)Stories about Mr Assange's contempt for women had been doing the rounds for some time.
Second: he has not been charged, the Swedish system does not work that way; he has been told to attend the preliminary judicial investigation - and that is what he is fleeing.
Third: Assange claims that he would be OK with attending that hearing but that he thinks that the Swedes will extradite him to the USA, based on no evidence whatsoever of such a plot; he is also says he is asking for legally enforceable undertakings from the US Government that they will not attempt any extradition - which would be impossible.
His claim that the rape charges are part of a plot does not stand up to any thought at all (something I failed to do originally). If there had been such a plot to have Assange removed to the USA then it would more likely that the USA would have asked the British authorities to hold Assange whilst they presented their case - and the Brits would have been only too happy to have done so.
The truth seems to be that Assange is terrified of having to face up to an investigation which would show him as not a hero but as a despicable and rather creepy human being, no matter what the outcome of that investigation. To this end he has fabricated a tragedy of which he is the lone hero.
