can control copyright law, they should be able to control at least the defacement of the US flag for commercial purposes. I disagree strongly with any defacement of the flag, but an individual doing it is covered by the 1st Amendment. Selling a defaced flag on the other hand should be illegal using something like a copyright justification.

No cause warrants defacing the flag even ones which I agree with.
