(9,356 posts)Including ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman deities together. The catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt, built circa the 2d Century CE. When I lived in Alexandria I loved visiting this place. It descends for 3 stories underground and is wonderfully creepy and weird.
The weirdest thing is the mix of religious symbolism. There's a painting of Anubis preparing a body for the afterlife, placed right above a painting of Persephone going to Hades. Statues of Anubis and the crocodile god Sobek, crammed into the armor and uniforms of Roman soldiers. Totally bonkers.
Local legend says the catacombs were discovered in 1900 by a donkey falling in a hole.
Nearby in Alexandria, a giant pile of rubble stood until 1960, just taking up space. When the archeologists started digging, they found a whole Roman neighborhood - including an amphitheater, public baths and a couple of Roman villas.
