Locusts used to be a regular plague on farms in the Midwest and West -- so much so, there was at one time concern that it might not be possible to ever settle the far west with a permanent White population. Then they mysteriously vanished, as farmers and developers had unwittingly drained and plowed the swampy regions where they apparently bred. So it's not just in the far North where melting ice has revealed newly perishable artifacts and remains.
