If NASA had spent a fortune on slick production values, Hollywood celebrities, special effects, and network television quality satellite feeds, they would have gotten shit for that as well. And worse, it would have distanced the audience from the project scientists, engineers, technicians, and yes, administrators, who accomplished this.

This was a nice thank you to all the people who made it happen.
