The Dreyfus Affair is also about the struggle between modernity and premodernity. A conflict between two concepts of the world and of society, between competing visions of mankind. External circumstances such as age, social class, religion, nation VS. each person as an individual.

The fin de siecle, which some scholars point to as the ideological root of Fascism which had its beginnings in Vichy France.
