13. Walker is another example of how high schools and colleges failed top tier athletes

Walker went to University of Georgia for four years, but didn't graduate. In fact he once claimed he graduated in the top 1% of his class, and also at one time claimed he was his high school valedictorian (do these statements sound familiar, DUers?).

In truth, Walker was likely shuttled into classes in high school and UGA that would allow him to keep his GPA above 2.0 so he could play sports. This happened to many college athletes (and I would not be shocked if its continuing to happen to this day). What really brought this to light was Dexter Manley, who played for Washington during the same era as Walker; he studied for 4 years at Oklahoma State, but admitted in the early 1990s to being functionally illiterate.
