Miami Dolphins Fire Brian Flores [View all]

The day after the NFL regular season ends is a dark day for many coaches, as firings typically come for those coaches whose teams have failed or repeatedly failed to perform during the season. However, the firing of Brian Flores by the Miami Dolphins came as a surprise to much of the national media. If you're a fan of the Dolphins and follow their local media, there were some who predicted this firing was coming.

The Dolphins Owner, Stephen Ross issued the following statement through the team. "I made a decision today to part ways with Brian Flores," Ross said. "After evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that key dynamics of our football organization weren't functioning at a level I want it to be and felt that this decision was in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins. "

The underlying reason Flores was fired despite two consecutive winning seasons had more to do with interpersonal relationship issues than on the field performance, namely the relationships between Flores, the General Manager Chris Grier, and the starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

As a fan, I welcome this as Flores has demonstrated he can't build a coaching staff. He went through four offensive coordinators in three seasons and hired an offensive line coach this season who managed to have three of his starters rated as part of the five lowest performing linemen in the NFL. My hope is they hire an experienced head coach candidate (my choice would be Jim Caldwell) who has been around and has a Rolodex of names and contacts who can come in and become part of the staff.
