S.F. Giants signed three starters for less than the cost of one Max Scherzer [View all]

Annual salaries, equally divided*

Max Scherzer: $34 M

Alex Wood: $12.5
Alex Cobb: $10 M
Anthony DeSclafani: $12 M

Scherzer, 2021: 15-4 w/l, 30 starts, 179 innings pitched

Wood, Cobb, and DeSclafani, 2021: 31-14 w/l, 75 starts, 399.2 innings pitched.

Add in Logan Webb, just for fun, who was paid just $583,000 in 2021 ...

Giants: 42-17 w/l, 102 starts, 548 innings pitched.

Four S.F. starters for the price of one N.Y. The Giants are getting 22 more wins, 72 more starts, and 369 more innings.

------------------------

Granted, the money paid to Scherzer means nothing because MLB teams are free to spend as much as they want. New York could sign 3 more Scherzers with little penalty. But San Francisco still gets the better deal.

*divided salaries for easy comparison, not counting deferred money or bonuses, etc.
