If Giants and Phillies finish tied for baseballs worst record, who gets the No.1 overall draft pick?
LOS ANGELES The Giants still own the worst record in the major leagues, but their draft position in 2018 is far from settled as they enter the final week of the season.
They are 61-94. So are the Philadelphia Phillies. If those two clubs finish the season with identical records, the Phillies would be awarded the top pick in next Junes draft because they had a worse record in 2016.
Then you have the free-falling Detroit Tigers, who just announced that manager Brad Ausmus will not return. The Tigers are just a game better at 62-93. The Chicago White Sox are a half-game better, at 62-92.
In case you were wondering, the White Sox also would hold the draft tiebreaker over the Giants by virtue of an inferior 2016 record. So would the Tigers, who were even with the Giants in the loss column but won one fewer game because they only played 161 in 2016.
