I'm old enough to remember Barry Goldwater. Tricky Dick Nixon was able to turn them to their current path with his Southern Strategy. He couldn't have done that without harnessing their bottomless well of bigotry. A big part of why we are in our current fix is because DOJ chose not to prosecute Nixon and Agnew for their crimes. Both of them were allowed to skate by resigning. As the historian, Heather Cox Richardson points out in her newsletter and podcasts, the GQP party started to go bad after the Civil War. As a country, we are being faced with our history of violence, injustice and oppression of anyone who is not a wealthy white man. The GQP is the party that toadies to that group and promotes their vile agenda.
