It's a hoot.

I also think that you could simply read the regular Little House books, at least up to By the Shores of Silver Lake. I think that one would be a little intense for a very young child.

A lot of old classics are wonderful. The Velveteen Rabbit comes to mind. Also the three books by Virginia Lee Burton, The Little House, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Katie and the Big Snow.
