Pronounced EE-day, born c. 1958, Joe grew up in South Central Los Angeles, which he used as the setting for a series of crime novels. His 2016 debut novel was nominated for a 2017 Edgar Award for best first novel by an American writer. Second novel got New York Times Critics' Best of the Year and winner of the Anthony, Macavity, and Shamus Awards.
