In the late 21st century between devastating global warming and catastrophic sea rise, the Free Southern State of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, are in armed conflict with the rest of the country. The U.S. capitol is now in Columbus, Ohio, as DC is completely underwater. Mexico occupies all of Arizona, and most of California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. It's about the logical result of today's political divisions. Quite good so far.
