Only those initiated into the island's wisdom schools or harekura (wharekura) were enabled to learn the ancient script. The writing was made a tapu or sacred restriction that covered the wisdom school and protected it from those who were unprepared for the sacred writing. Today everyone in the world has been restricted from learning the ancient Rongorongo writing.
