I used to work the annual PowWow at Fort Omaha. The year my now 25year old granddaughter was old enough, (5th grade), she volunteered to carry water for the dancers. As Chief John Wolf called for the open dance, he motioned for her to stand beside him and dance the circle with him. I can't describe the look on her face; joy, wonder? Not good enough.

I will always cherish that day. I had a great respect for the Chief, but I loved him for that gift.
