who do not recoil in fear at the mere sight of a private firearm. Guns are ubiquitous in many places without any problems at all. Historically, this was even more so, and many schools used to have rifle clubs or students bringing their gun to school during hunting season. Your surprise potentially speaks more about your limited experience or understanding of many of your fellow citizens than any real danger.

Never forget that there are 80-100+ million legal gun owners in the USA, representing more than 1 out of every 3 adults, and the percentage of crime committed by these people is proportionally minuscule to the population.

Of course, that does not mean all gun supporters object to all firearm restrictions or safety procedures in schools (or anywhere else). Gun owners and gun rights supporters are not nearly as dangerous as you appear to surmise, nor are their opinions as monolithic as some believe. However, when politicians like the president and Hillary Clinton discuss places like Australia and the UK as models for gun control, it reveals an ultimate goal of strict bans, and it's then unsurprising that gun rights supporters become totally unwilling to compromise when each inch demanded is intended to become a mile.

As I stated, I believe many gun rights supporters would compromise on open carry rules. However, compromise means someone offered in return that they are otherwise unable to achieve.
