We have 4 cats - unrelated 14 yr olds, and 3 yr old brother and sister Siamese mix. 3 of the 4 purr readily, and the least provocation. The male Siamese purrs even if you just speak to him.

His sister, who loves to sit on my lap, purrs for my husband, but rarely for me. I have no idea why. I try not to be jealous, but am not totally succeeding.

We sleep in separate rooms because hubby has sleep apnea and wakes up several times a night. If the sister kitty curls up on my husband's bed during the day and I go in there to pet her, she will purr for me when she is on his bed. She'll purr for him if she's on mine.
