Our attitudes about drinking are different than 40 years ago, when drinking and smoking were manly attributes to be admired. I am reminded of this because there was a series of Matt Helm detective movies with Dean Martin swilling booze and puffing cigarettes. And looking silly doing it. Nowadays, alcoholism is something the protagonist must fight and overcome.
